Vivaldi’s music was hugely popular in his lifetime, and his works were widely performed throughout Europe. He wrote hundreds of concertos for the Pieta’s orchestra, as well as many other works. The Pieta was known for its excellent orchestra, which gave Vivaldi the opportunity to showcase his compositional skills. It was here that Vivaldi composed some of his most famous works, including The Four Seasons. In 1703, Vivaldi was appointed as the master of music at a girls’ orphanage in Venice, called the Ospedale della Pieta. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and virtuosic player. By the age of fifteen, Vivaldi was playing the violin in public concerts in Venice. It is likely that Vivaldi received his first musical instruction from his father. His father, Giovanni Battista Vivaldi, was a well-known violinist and composer in Venice. Though little is known about his early life, it is clear that he came from a musical family.
